Proactive Solution is an over-the-counter topical treatment for mild to severe forms of acne, which was first launched in 1995. Proactive Solution is only available online and not available from brick and mortar stores. So this means you can’t just walk down the street and buy this acne treatment kit at your local pharmacy. You will have to purchase Proactive Solution online for delivery to your home or PO Box.

Proactive Solution was developed by two board certified dermatologists and is intended for individuals with mild to severe acne.  Proactive Solution is formulated to work for all skin types including sensitive skin.  Users typically see the best results after two to three months of regular use.  So if you decide to buy this stuff, you should stick with it to see the best results!

Acne can be very difficult to control.   So the best acne treatments must take a multi-pronged approached to treating acne.  The goal of any acne treatment is to keep skin clean, pores unclogged, and if necessary kill bacteria living in your skin.  When pores get clogged with oil and dirt, they can get infected, and this is what causes blackheads, pimples, and other types of skin problems.  Proactive Solution is designed to fight all of the sources of acne and help heal your skin to give you an even complexion.

The Basic Proactive Solution kit fights acne using three different specifically formulated products, which when used together are intended to act synergistically to heal skin and treat even severe forms of acne. The three components of Proactive Solution consists of Renewing Cleanser: a benzoyl peroxide medicated exfoliating cleanser, Revitalizing Toner: an alcohol free, glycolic acid toner, and Repairing Treatment: a non-comedogenic anti-microbial moisturizer.  Users are instructed to use the three components twice a day to see the best results, but people with sensitive skin should start the regiment a little slower to make sure that the skin adjusts better.

Proactive Reviews|Renewing Cleanser

Proactive Solution Renewing Cleanser is an alcohol free exfoliating cleanser that contains 2.5% benzoyl peroxide.  Benzoyl peroxide is a strong anti-microbial and is used to kill any bacteria that might living in your skin.  Unfortunately, close to 5% of people are allergic to benzoyl peroxide. Renewing Cleanser has 50% less benzoyl peroxide than some over the counter acne treatments, but if you are sensitive to benzoyl peroxide or have a known allergy, we strongly advise you either avoid using the Renewing Cleanser or start off using it only once a day or once every other day until your skin adjusts.

Special note: Keep benzoyl peroxide away from colored fabric!  It will bleach fabric on prolonged contact.  Use a white towel to dry your face after using any product with benzoyl peroxide.  Also, make sure that your skin and hands are dry before handling any colored fabric.

Users are instructed to start the regiment by applying a dime sized amount of the Renewing Cleanser to damp skin and massage the area with your finger tips for 1-2 minutes.  Once complete, you should rinse your skin thoroughly with warm water and pat dry.

Many users report that Proactive Solution irritates their skin.  This is due in part to the benzoyl peroxide present in Renewing Cleanser and Repairing Treatment.  Some users complain of itchy skin, redness, and dry flaky skin.  Most of these symptoms go away once your skin adjusts.  Since benzoyl peroxide drys your skin and makes it more sensitive to sunlight, it is very important to use a moisturizer and non-comedogenic sunscreen.  I like to use Neutrogena Oil Free Moisture SPF 15 or 35.  As the name suggests, it is a combination moisturizer and sunscreen and it does not cause pimples.

Proactive Reviews|Revitalizing Toner

Proactive Solution Revitalizing Toner is an alcohol-free exfoliating toner.  This toner is intended to clean out pores, balance skin tone, and remove excess oil.  It contains no alcohol, which tends to dry skin.  Just like in the case of the Renewing Cleanser, users are instructed to use the Revitalizing Toner every morning and right before your go to bed in the evening.

To use the Revitalizing Toner, you apple a dime size amount of the toner to your skin using a cotton ball or a cotton pad.  Once you are finished, you should allow the toner to dry.  Do not rinse it off.

If the Revitalizing Toner causes irritation, users are advised to stop using the toner or use it less frequently.  Some Proactive Solutions users only use the toner for spot treatment or when they have severe break outs.

 Proactive Reviews|Repairing Treatment

Proactive Solution Repairing Treatment is a  non-comedogenic anti-microbial moisturizer.  This moisturizer contains no oils.  So that means it won’t cause any breakouts (Acne Tip: always check your facial moisturizers to make sure they are non-comedogenic and do not contain oils in the ingredients section) and is supposed to help heal skin.  And that is a good thing, because the Renewing Cleanser and Revitalizing Toner contain agents that will dry your skin.  That being said, the Repairing treatment does have 2.5% benzoyl peroxide, but unlike the Renewing Cleanser the benzoyl peroxide stays on your face all day.  This cause very red and dry skin for individuals with sensitive skin.  For people who tolerate benzoyl peroxide well, this is a great way to constantly treat problematic skin.

To use the Repairing Treatment you apply a pea sized amount of the lotion with your fingertips to your skin.  Allow the lotion to dry.  It is important not to wash it off.  This is the final step of the treatment regiment and should be done twice a day for best results.

Since all three of these products can cause skin irritation and dryness we highly recommend using a non-comedogenic lotion, in addition to the Repairing Treatment, on a daily basis.  If you can find a lotion with a light weight sunscreen it would be even better, because benzoyl peroxide is known to make certain users photosensitive (makes it easier for you to sunburn).

It is very important that all three products are used together and as instructed for best results.  In situations where your skin is particularly sensitive to one of the products, you should try to start off with using the product once every other day and work your way up to twice a day.

Proactive Reviews|The Final Verdict

Although not all users report success using Proactive Solutions, if taken properly and for at least two months, the majority of users report an improvement in their skin complexion and a decrease in the number of breakouts.  If you decide to discontinue using Proactive Solutions, you skin will go through a period of increased breakouts as it adjusts back to its natural state.

We recommend using Proactive Solutions if:

1) You have mild to severe acne;

2) Your acne has not responded to other over the counter treatments;

3) You do not have an allergy to benzoyl peroxide;

4) Are not sensitive to benzoyl peroxide; and

5) Do not have sensitive skin.
